Most buyers ask for a mold price too early. They send a STEP file, say “ABS or maybe PC,” guess the annual volume, and expect one clean number back by Friday.

That number is usually half estimate, half risk control.

Quick answer

Injection mold cost from China is the total tooling investment paid to design, machine, assemble, test, and prepare a production mold in China for export or part production. For most U.S. buyer projects, a simple export mold may cost $2,800 to $8,500, a medium housing mold often lands around $7,200 to $22,000, and complex multi-cavity or tight-tolerance tools can run far higher.

Small mold. Big mistake possible.

The mold price is not only steel. It includes DFM work, mold base, cavity steel, electrodes, CNC, EDM, polishing, fitting, trials, texture preparation, sample runs, project management, and sometimes packing for export. If the quote skips three of those, the price will look beautiful until the first trial.

Injection mold cost from China starts with part risk, not steel weight

A mold maker does not price only what the part weighs. He prices the trouble hidden inside the part.

A flat PP lid with soft edges is boring work. A small PA66 connector with thin walls, shutoffs, 0.04 mm positional tolerance, and a cosmetic Class A face is not boring. Same outside size, different quote.

That is why two molds that both fit a 168T injection molding machine can be separated by $9,000 or more. The machine size gives a rough sense of mold size, but the detail inside the steel decides the hours.

A buyer usually sees:

  • part size
  • resin
  • quantity
  • number of cavities
  • visible surfaces

The toolmaker sees:

  • shutoff angle
  • rib depth
  • slide travel
  • lifter strength
  • venting risk
  • polish direction
  • gate witness
  • deformation after cooling
  • how painful the part will be to measure

Short answer: cost follows risk.

A textured surface at VDI 30 or rougher may need 3° draft, while a polished wall sometimes survives with 1.5°. If that draft is missing, the quote either rises now or the mold gets repaired later. Later is usually uglier.

A realistic cost table

For early budgeting, use ranges. Not promises.

These are shop-floor ranges for quoting, not customs values or landed cost. A 317 mm × 246 mm ABS cover with one side action might quote at $8,400 from one supplier and $14,800 from another because the second supplier included moldflow review, better steel, more trial time, and export packing.

I’ve seen both quotes be honest.

The problem is when the cheaper quote pretends to include the same work. It usually doesn’t.

What the quote usually includes

A proper China mold quote should show what is included without making you chase the sales engineer for three days.

Good quotes normally cover:

  1. DFM review before cutting steel
  2. Mold design with 2D/3D approval
  3. Mold base and cavity/core steel with grade named
  4. CNC, EDM, wire cutting, grinding, fitting
  5. Electrodes for ribs, bosses, logos, and sharp details
  6. Standard components such as ejector pins, guide pillars, springs, water fittings
  7. Mold trial at least T0 and T1
  8. Sample shipment terms, or at least who pays
  9. Final inspection report before shipment
  10. Export packing if the mold leaves China

Eight lines can tell you a lot.

If a supplier only writes “1 set injection mold, P20 steel, 35 days,” that is not a quote. That is a price tag.

Ask for the missing structure. If your supplier can’t answer this in one email, that’s your answer.

The cheap quote removed something

There is always a way to make a mold cheaper. The honest question is what got removed.

Sometimes the saving is real. A simple hidden bracket does not need H13 steel, mirror polish, or a hot runner. For most consumer parts, just use ABS or PP and stop overthinking it unless the working temperature, chemical exposure, or drop test says otherwise.

Other savings are fake.

A quote can drop by using soft pre-hardened steel, skipping proper water lines, reducing electrode count, polishing only the visible area, leaving venting for trial correction, or planning one quick T0 and calling it finished. The mold will still exist. It may even shoot samples.

Production is where it complains.

We once reviewed a low-cost enclosure mold where the supplier saved money by reducing cooling around a thick boss area. The first samples looked acceptable after a long cycle. At production speed, the part sank around the screw boss and warped near the latch. The buyer thought they had saved about $3,200. The repair and delay cost more than that before the second shipment.

Cheap steel is easy to see. Cheap thinking hides better.

Cold runner, hot runner, and the “free” runner problem

A cold runner mold costs less to build. A hot runner mold can cost less to run.

That is the first decision.

A cold runner may save $2,500 on the mold and waste $0.037 per shot forever. That sounds tiny until the part runs 480,000 cycles a year.

But hot runners are not magic. For glass-filled nylon, flame-retardant PC/ABS, or color-sensitive parts, a bad hot runner choice can create black specks, color streaks, or pressure imbalance. Ask for the brand and model, not “Chinese hot runner” as a lazy line item.

Actually, that is only half true for very simple single-cavity tools. A cold sprue can be the right answer there.

Steel choice moves price, but not always how buyers think

Steel matters. It does not fix bad design.

Common export molds from China often use P20, 718H, NAK80, S136, H13, or similar grades depending on life, texture, resin, and polish. A transparent PC lens does not belong in the same steel decision as a black PP battery cover.

A few rough rules from quoting work:

  • P20 or equivalent works for many low-to-medium volume parts.
  • 718H is common when better polish and longer life are needed.
  • NAK80 helps with polish and precision details.
  • S136 is used for corrosion resistance, polish, and some clear parts.
  • H13 fits hot wear areas, high-temperature resin, or demanding inserts.

Do not buy steel names blindly.

If a supplier quotes S136 but the mold design has weak shutoffs, poor cooling, and no spare inserts, the steel grade only makes the mistake more expensive. For many U.S. sourcing projects, a well-built 718H mold beats a poorly designed “premium steel” mold every time.

Ask for hardness. Ask for expected shot life. Ask which components are inserts and which are cut directly into the core.

The steel certificate is useful, but the mold structure is what saves you when something breaks.

DFM changes the bill before steel is cut

DFM is where the mold cost can still move without anyone touching a CNC machine.

A real DFM report should challenge the part, not decorate the PDF. It should mark undercuts, thin steel, rib ratio, gate options, ejector marks, sink risk, parting line location, draft, texture allowance, and tolerance risk. ISO 20457 covers tolerances and acceptance conditions for molded plastic parts, and it applies to injection molding among other plastic molding processes.

Good DFM feels a little annoying. That is the point.

A 0.8 mm rib connected to a 2.6 mm wall can create hesitation and visible flow marks near the rib base. Increasing the rib base radius or moving the gate may cost nothing in CAD and save two trial loops later.

Hesitation causes visible flow marks where thin ribs meet the main wall.

That sentence looks simple because the problem is simple. The repair is not always simple after steel is cut.

For buyer-side decisions, check three DFM items before deposit:

  • Where is the gate, and what mark will it leave?
  • Where is the parting line, and can the customer accept it?
  • Which dimensions are truly critical, and which are copied from a CAD default tolerance?

Most drawings are over-toleranced. I see ±0.05 mm applied to plastic features that do not need it and cannot hold it cheaply. Change that before quoting, not after sample rejection.

Mold trial cost is where vague projects get expensive

The mold quote is not finished when the mold is assembled. It is tested.

T0 is the first trial. T1 is usually the first corrected trial. T2 or T3 happens when the part, material, tolerance, or buyer expectation was not clear enough at the start.

One trial is normal. Four trials means something was missed.

Trial cost hides in several places: machine time, resin, color masterbatch, drying, technician hours, measurement, sample inspection, international shipping, and video documentation. A supplier may include the first 2 hours of trial but charge for extra resin or special material. That is fair if written down.

What is not fair is silence.

For a U.S. buyer, sample shipping can look silly compared with the mold price. It still delays decisions. A $68 courier pack sent with the wrong material label can waste a week because the engineer cannot approve the part.

Ask for trial terms:

  • How many mold trials are included?
  • Who pays for resin?
  • How many samples are free?
  • Will the supplier provide process parameters?
  • Will they measure critical dimensions before shipping?
  • Are video and photos included?
  • What happens if the correction is due to supplier mold design?

Short. Written. No drama later.

U.S. landed cost is not the mold quote

A China mold price is not the amount your company actually spends.

For a U.S. buyer importing an injection mold, landed cost may include mold price, inland trucking in China, export packing, ocean or air freight, insurance, U.S. customs entry, broker fees, harbor charges, delivery to your molder, and duty. A CBP ruling classified an injection type mold under HTSUS 8480.71.8045, stated a 3.1% duty rate, and also stated that China-origin products under that subheading were subject to an additional 25% Section 301 duty unless excluded.

Tariffs move. Do not guess.

CBP and Federal Register notices have also changed additional duty treatment for China-origin goods under IEEPA measures since 2025, including China/Hong Kong duty changes reported by CBP and published notices. USTR also maintains the Section 301 tariff action and exclusion pages, which buyers or brokers should check before entry.

That does not mean every mold lands at the same duty burden. Classification, exclusions, Chapter 99 reporting, entry date, and customs guidance matter.

Use a licensed customs broker before the mold ships, not after it reaches Los Angeles.

A mold quoted at $18,600 EXW can become a very different number landed in Ohio. The supplier did not lie. The buyer compared the wrong number.

Questions to send before paying the deposit

Copy this into your supplier email and make them answer it plainly.

  1. What steel will be used for cavity, core, sliders, lifters, and inserts?
  2. What hardness is expected after machining or heat treatment?
  3. What mold life are you quoting?
  4. How many cavities are included?
  5. What runner system is included, and which brand if hot runner?
  6. Where do you recommend the gate, and what mark will remain?
  7. Where will the parting line be?
  8. Which surfaces are polished, textured, or EDM finished?
  9. How many trials and samples are included?
  10. What resin is assumed for trial?
  11. What tolerances do you believe are risky?
  12. What is the estimated cycle time?
  13. Does the price include export packing?
  14. What Incoterm is quoted?
  15. What is excluded?

The last question is the best one.

A supplier who answers exclusions clearly is usually safer than a supplier who says “all included” and hopes nobody reads the details.

How much does an injection mold cost from China?

An injection mold from China can cost from about $2,800 for a simple low-volume tool to more than $85,000 for a complex, multi-cavity, tight-tolerance production mold. Most normal consumer product molds fall somewhere between $6,000 and $25,000 before freight, duty, and sample approval costs.

Yes, a China-built export mold can be moved to a U.S. molder if it is designed to the receiving factory’s machine, water fitting, electrical, safety, and documentation requirements. Confirm platen size, locating ring, sprue bushing, hydraulic connections, hot runner voltage, and mold manual requirements before design approval.

The lowest number is not the best number. The best injection mold cost from China is the quote that names the assumptions, shows the risks, and leaves the fewest surprises after steel is cut.
