Quality Control in Plastic Mold Making

Topworks applies incoming, in-process and final quality checks throughout custom plastic injection mold manufacturing. Inspection activities are planned around approved drawings, mold specifications and customer requirements. APQP, FMEA and PPAP-related documentation can be discussed where applicable; our QC team reviews findings and corrective actions regularly.

Plastic mold quality control

  • Incoming, in-process & final control
  • APQP, FMEA & PPAP support as required
  • Statistical inspection methods where applicable
  • Regular QC review and improvement meetings
The System

Three quality control points

1

Incoming quality

Tool steel and purchased mold components are checked against the approved material grade, specifications and project requirements before use. The required records depend on the agreed inspection plan.

2

In-process quality

During machining and assembly, designated checks address critical dimensions, machined surfaces and component fit against approved drawings. Nonconformities are reviewed before subsequent operations.

3

Final quality

After mold trials, selected sample dimensions and functional features are evaluated against agreed acceptance criteria. Inspection findings and any required corrections are reviewed before mold approval or shipment.

Standards

Standards and documentation

Our quality-control approach uses documented checks, drawing-based acceptance criteria and measurement records appropriate to each tooling project. Statistical methods may be used where sufficient process data and customer requirements justify them.

For projects that require them, we can discuss quality-planning methods such as APQP, FMEA and PPAP and relevant customer-specific documentation. The scope of any formal submission or approval package is agreed before the project starts. Incoming materials are checked against the specified mould steel, while mold components and trial samples are reviewed against agreed drawing tolerances.

Improvement

Continuous improvement

Our QC team reviews inspection findings, causes of nonconformities and corrective actions in regular meetings. Lessons learned can inform subsequent tooling projects, helping strengthen consistency, traceability and customer communication.

FAQ

Quality control FAQ

How does Topworks control mold quality?

Topworks uses incoming checks for steel and purchased components, in-process inspections for critical machining and assembly features, and final sample checks after mold trials. Inspection scope and acceptance criteria are agreed with the customer for each tooling project.

What quality standards and tools do you use?

We use drawing-based inspections and documented quality records. For relevant customer programs, we can discuss the application of APQP, FMEA and PPAP, with documentation and submission requirements defined by the agreed project scope.

What is checked on incoming materials?

Incoming checks compare tool steel and purchased components with the specified grades, dimensions and purchase requirements, including the selected mould steel and associated component specifications before machining or assembly.

What happens at final inspection?

After a mold trial, agreed sample dimensions and functional requirements are evaluated against the approved drawing and tolerances.

How does the QC team drive improvement?

The QC team reviews issues, their root causes and corrective actions in regular meetings. Findings are documented where required and used to improve subsequent project controls.
