Quality Control in Plastic Mold Making

At Topworks, quality assurance and control are built into every step of the mould-making process — incoming, in-process and final. We work to APQP, FMEA and PPAP with standardised documentation, and our QC team meets weekly to drive detection and prevention.

Plastic mold quality control

  • Incoming, in-process & final control
  • APQP, FMEA, PPAP
  • Statistical process control
  • Weekly QC improvement meetings
The System

Three quality control points

1

Incoming quality

All tool-steel material and outsourced custom components are checked strictly against the requirements for the custom mould.

2

In-process quality

Machining and assembly are under strict control; the QC team supervises and checks tool tolerance and processed surfaces.

3

Final quality

On completion, the main dimensions of the trial sample are thoroughly checked so no step is missed and the mould quality is confirmed.

Standards

Standards and documentation

We maintain procedures that adopt statistical techniques to check and control our processes, so we produce consistently high-quality tooling.

Our system works to APQP, FMEA and PPAP with standardised quality-control documents, and we can prepare the documentation customers require. Incoming material is verified as the correct mould steel, and finished tools are checked against drawing tolerances.

Improvement

Continuous improvement

Each week our QC team meets to discuss every issue and seek out detection and prevention solutions. That loop — catch, analyse, prevent — is what keeps quality consistent from one project to the next, and it is how we raise capacity to support customer documentation and quality-control needs.

Need documented quality on your tooling?

Tell us your quality and documentation requirements. We’ll build the mould to APQP/FMEA/PPAP and provide the reports.

FAQ

Quality control FAQ

How does Topworks control mold quality?

Quality is built into every step of the mould-making process at three control points: incoming quality (all tool steel and outsourced components are checked against the tool’s requirements), in-process quality (a QC team supervises machining and assembly, checking tolerance and surface), and final quality (a thorough check of the trial sample’s main dimensions before the tool ships).

What quality standards and tools do you use?

We adopt statistical techniques and standardised quality-control documents, working to APQP, FMEA and PPAP, and can prepare the documentation customers require.

What is checked on incoming materials?

All tool-steel material and outsourced custom components are checked to ensure they strictly satisfy the requirements for the custom mould — the right mould steel and correct components before anything is machined.

What happens at final inspection?

Once the mould is complete, a thorough check is made of the main dimensions of the trial plastic sample to confirm no process step was missed and the mould quality is sound — verified against the drawing and tolerances.

How does the QC team drive improvement?

The QC team meets every week to discuss each issue and seek detection and prevention solutions — a continuous-improvement loop that keeps quality consistent across projects.
